Are You getting your Flu Shot? Did you know?

I went for my flu shot today and learned something very valuable that I did not know, and perhaps others did not know either. I go every year and usually get one from the doctor during a routine visit and it has always been very routine. This year the doctor, as usual, asked me how I was feeling and I said, to be honest, I have a bit of a cold – in my head and in my chest.
That’s when I was told you can’t have a flu shot when you are sick, which at first hit me as kind of strange so of course, I asked the doctor why? She said it is all about building an immunity to the major strains of the flu and your body can’t be dealing with any other issues to accept the shot and allow it to build the proper antibodies. Makes sense!
So rather than a poke in the arm, I found myself at the imaging lab getting chest x-rays. I guess it is good to be thorough and cautious and make sure we are all very healthy and strong.
Over the past 31 flu seasons, put out by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), shows that there are 23,607 Flu-related Deaths per year, on average. These figures go all the way back to 1976. In some years as few as 3,349 have died (back in 1986-7). But the highest toll was 48,614, just seven seasons ago (2003-4).
So, if you have not gotten your flu shot and you are feeling good today get out there and get one. Most pharmacies can do them, and it only takes a minute. A minute can save your life.
