How To Properly Disinfect Your Gym

  • On October 7, 2021

Those who frequent gyms and fitness centers may be wondering whether it is really safe to attend indoor facilities during a pandemic – even when safety and disinfection guidelines are strictly followed.

It is no secret that there is risk involved when attending indoor facilities, especially those full of people exercising without masks on and sharing the same equipment. The environments of gyms and fitness facilities pose more risk due to the fact that viral spread is increased when people are breathing rapidly for prolonged periods, especially in poorly ventilated areas.

Not to mention that a portion of the cleaning done in gyms is the responsibility of the gym-goer themselves – there’s no guarantee that a piece of equipment has been properly cleaned after use.

As a gym owner or manager, it is essential to create a safe environment for your staff and customers by understanding and implementing the most effective cleaning and disinfection practices. This is important for not only reducing the spread of COVID-19, but also other flus, viruses, and bacteria that can spread in shared spaces.

In your cleaning routine, the CDC recommends that any object or surface that is touched everyday should be disinfected multiple times a day. Implementing a regular cleaning schedule will help to ensure that cleaning and disinfection is performed adequately every day. For more information about COVID-19 protocols, we recommend you read the CDC’s COVID-19 Employer Information for Gyms and Fitness Centers.

As experts in the cleaning industry, we will be breaking down the best and most effective methods of cleaning and disinfection within your facility to help you reduce risk as much as possible to keep your staff and customers safe.

Disinfection Wipes

The first method we recommend for use inside all fitness facilities is disinfecting wipes. Wipes are ideal for use on gym equipment that has come into contact with individuals as the pre-saturated wipes allow the disinfectant to directly contact the object. They’re the preferred method over a spray bottle and paper towels.

There are four main reasons why wipes are the superior method. To learn why, check out our blog

Our wipes are designed to be durable and powerful as they can kill 99.9% of common bacteria as well as the human coronavirus – the virus that causes COVID-19. The quaternary disinfectant in these wipes will kill germs on the surface while also getting rid of any dirt accumulated on the surface.

Disinfecting wipes should be used for personal disinfection, rather than the main source of disinfection in your gym. Wipes are the perfect solution for individual gym members to disinfect their equipment or other touch points after use as they are quick and easy to use.

A dispenser such as our Stainless Steel Floor Dispenser or Wall Mounted Dispenser would be a great addition to allow your members to access the wipes easily.

Disinfecting Foggers

While wipes are a great disinfecting method, they are not ideal for disinfecting every single piece of equipment in a gym as it would be time-consuming and would take a large number of wipes to get the job done.

To disinfect large or hard-to-reach spaces, disinfectant foggers are the most optimal solution as they are extremely fast, easy, and efficient to use. The technology of foggers and sprayers takes a disinfectant solution and sprays a fine mist into the air that will fall onto surfaces and objects. The disinfectant solution will dry down, leaving the surfaces disinfected.

Foggers also have the ability to purify the air and deodorize surfaces. This is a big bonus as virus particles can linger in the air and gym equipment is especially prone to developing odor from sweat.

At Roxton, we carry a variety of different disinfectant foggers to suit various needs depending upon the size of your space and how often disinfection is required. Here is a quick breakdown of our different foggers:

  • The Minion Cordless Fogger: A cordless, handheld cold fogger that comes with two rechargeable batteries. The freedom to operate without cords is a huge advantage with this fogger. It has an effective spray distance of 10 feet, a 1.8L reservoir, and will last through 25-30 minutes of operation with one battery.
  • The Nano Atomizer Fogger: A handheld dry fogger perfect for smaller spaces such as households, salons, and offices. Due to the dry fogging technology, this would be ideal for spaces with electronics.
  • Ultra Low Volume (ULV) Fogger: Roxton’s ULV cold fogger is perfect for larger spaces such as gyms or schools. This fogger has an effective spray distance of 16 feet, a 1.6L reservoir, and a 15ft long cord. We also carry a Deluxe ULV fogger, and a Heavy Duty ULV Fogger for larger spaces.
